Regional & Multisport Sevens
Historic first for Sevens Rugby in Pakistan
The Punjab Rugby Association, under the auspices of Pakistan Rugby Union and Punjab Olympic Association, made history today with the inclusion of Rugby Sevens in the 71st Samsung Punjab Games.
The Games were held in the historic city of Lahore and it was the first time that Rugby had been included in any multisport event in Pakistan.
The news follows on from figures recently released by the IRB confirming that Rugby's inclusion in the Olympic Games has paved the way for the sport to penetrate untapped Asian markets, including Pakistan.
In Pakistan, Rugby participation has quadrupled over the past two years with an increase of 250% in the last year alone.
Punjab are the current National Rugby Champions of Pakistan and the region has the biggest Rugby development programme with almost 24 districts playing the Game at a competitive level, with the top 10 districts providing the core of the players for the National team.
Representative teams taking part in the tournament were Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Multan, Sahiwal and Dera Ghazi Khan.
Rugby Sevens will also be a full medal sport at the Next Pakistan National Games, which has already meant rugby spreading into state departments such as the Army, Navy and Police.
