 Greening announces Scotland Sevens squad
Colin Gregor retains the Scotland Sevens captaincy for the new season

New Scotland Sevens head coach, Phil Greening, has unveiled his first squad which will compete at the opening round of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series on Australia's Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Sevens - Fever Pitch takes place on October 13-14 and Greening has named 12 players, including Colin Gregor who returns as captain.

“This first tournament will be a fact-finding mission and our chance to set our stall out and show what we’re trying to achieve," said Greening.

“We’re constantly measuring our players on their strength, conditioning and skills and here we’ve got the players I believe to be excelling the most."

“I want to breed as much competition as possible in this squad, and have a deep player pool so everyone has to put up their hand and claim the shirt every time we travel.”

Liam Draycott is the final addition to the squad, before the squad fly out to Australia, and the South Africa-born 23-year-old qualifies for Scotland through his father.

Chris Dean, Michael Fedo, Rory Hughes, Mark Robertson, Andrew Turnbull, Michael Maltman, Colin Shaw, Alex Glashan and James Fleming are the nine other players apart from Gregor from the pro-pool whilst Peter Jericevich has also been included.

"Peter’s form, at the moment, is very good and he has earned his place for Australia," added Greening, who will travel with his squad to Australia on 2 October.

Peter Jericevich said: “I’ve always had a love for the game of Sevens and have kept playing it over the past few years. I was over in New York this summer competing in the US National Sevens Series and feel that got me very fit.

“Since then I’ve felt the sharpest I have ever been playing with Ayr this season, but I know going out to Australia, adjusting to the climate and competing well, that the bigger challenge starts now.”

Draycott added: "I’m really thrilled. I came over to Scotland when I’d finished school in South Africa and played for Edinburgh Accies, including at the Melrose Sevens.

“I just want to get out there, get as much game time as I possibly can and make a winning contribution for Scotland."

Greening will wait till the beginning of next week to name his 12th man once medical reviews have taken place over the weekend and his side will face defending champions Fiji, hosts Australia and Tonga on day one.
