Kenya name squad for Gold Coast Sevens
Kenya's new Sevens coach Mike Friday has named his squad of 12 to compete at the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia, the opening round of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series.
Nineteen-year old Cyprian Kuto, Eden Agero and Davis Chenge earn their maiden series call-ups to a squad that also includes the experienced quartet of captain Andrew Amonde, 2008/09 series top try-scorer Collins Injera, Biko Adema and Horace Otieno.
On notable absentee is Injera's brother, Humphrey Kayange, who is currently studying for a Masters degree in England.
“We are here to build something for Kenya and this is a journey for us. We are looking for consistency in performance and results," Friday told the media assembled at a press conference at the RFUEA Grounds.
"It was difficult selecting the final 12 owing to intense competition within the team. The selection was based on varied factors including the ability to read the game, balance in positioning, the blend between players, combinations, conditioning and strength."
Kenya have been drawn in Pool C alongside England, Samoa and new core Series side, Spain. In the opening match of the season they will face England, matching Friday against his former charges at the earliest possible time.
"We are building structures for posterity," said Kenya Rugby Union Chairman, Mwangi Muthee. "We will face challenges along the way but soon the results will be out there for all to see. We are very grateful to the team sponsors Kenya Airways for their continued support of the team."
