How is the Hong Kong Sevens working in 2012?

This year in Hong Kong two 12-team competitions will take place side by side as part of the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.

Competition 1: A competition between the current 12 ‘core teams’ on the Series, who will begin in Pools A, B and C.

The pool winners, pool runners-up and two best third-place finishers will go through to the Cup quarter finals; the losers of the Cup quarter finals will go through to the Plate semi finals; the four not involved in the Cup quarter finals will go straight to the Bowl semi finals.

Competition 2: A competition between 12 teams from across the six IRB regions, three of whom – the two finalists and the winner of the 3rd/4th play-off – will secure core team status and join the 12 existing core teams at each round of the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series. These 12 teams comprise the regional champions and others who qualified based on their performances in their regional events. Four are from Asia; three from Europe; two from North America & Caribbean; one from Oceania; one from South America; one from Africa.

The pool winners, pool runners-up and two best third-place finishers will go through to the Qualfier (Shield) quarter finals and play for the three 2012/13 Series places; the four not involved in the Qualifier quarter finals will play ranking matches.

So how are the quarter final line-ups decided in each competition?

After the pool rounds, the final position of the winner and runner-up in each pool, together with the best third-placed team and the second-best third-placed team, will be ranked in order based on the following:
- Competition Points, if teams are drawn then
- Points Difference, then
- Tries Difference, then
- Highest number of points scored, then
- Highest number of tries

Once this is decided, the teams will be ranked as follows:

Once ranked, the top 8 teams in both competitions will play a knock-out structure as follows:
