Flyer Mbovane returns for Springbok Sevens
South Africa Sevens coach Paul Treu has named his squad of 16 to play a Series warm-up tournament in Middelburg this weekend, with the exciting inclusion of promising wing, Tshotsho Mbovane.
Mbovane was hugely impressive when he made his Sevens debut as a teenager for South Africa but has since been sidelined with a knee injury.
He played at both the Hong Kong and Adelaide tournaments in 2011, scoring once in Hong Kong and four times in Adelaide, including one against Fiji in the Cup quarter final and one versus England in Cup semi.
Branco du Preez and Kyle Brown have also recently completed their rehabilitation from injuries and their involvement is likely to be limited in the Middelburg tournament, which gets underway on Friday and is the Blitzbokkes' only pre-season outing against international competition before they leave for Australia and the kick-off the HSBC Sevens World Series on the Gold Coast on 13-14 October.
South Africa will be in action against the likes of Wales, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and a host of local provincial selections.
“We are excited about this season because the HSBC Sevens World Series will again be a very tough tournament, and we also have the Sevens Rugby World Cup to look forward to next year in Russia,” said Treu.
“We are going to make full use of this tournament because it is the only time that we will be in action before we leave for the Gold Coast. Our management team has worked overtime to get the players ready after the squad suffered many injuries at the end of last season,” added Treu.
The Springbok Sevens for Middelburg: Kyle Brown, Chris Dry, Steven Hunt, Cheslin Kolbe, Paul Delport, Cecil Afrika, Tshotsho Mbovane, Branco du Preez, Stephan Dippenaar, Kwagga Smith, Frankie Horne, Craig Barry, Cornal Hendricks, Bernardo Botha, Pieter Engelbrecht, Reuben Johannes.
Wainiqolo joins Fiji coaching staff
Timoci Wainiqolo has been appointed by the Fiji Rugby Union as Alifereti Dere's assistant this season.
Wainiqolo's appointment follows the departure of Etuate Waqa, who has joined the Tongan Rugby Union as Rugby Sevens Director.
Wainiqolo is expected to coach Fiji at the Gold Coast Sevens in October as Dere is under travel sanctions to Australia.
