Russia on exciting RWC Sevens pathway
Yury Gostyuzhev celebrates a Russian win in Hong Kong

Russia Sevens will once again get an opportunity to gain valuable experience before they compete in the Rugby World Cup Sevens on home soil in June, at this weekend's Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens.

Having qualified from Hong Kong to head to next week's Marriott London Sevens for a chance to qualify as a core team on the 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series, this weekend's penultimate round on the Series will act as another milestone in Russia Sevens' busy season.

The Russians also have the small matter of the RWC Sevens in Moscow to look ahead to and captain Dmitry Perov is anticipating an exciting few months for his side.

"Hong Kong was very important for us," said Perov.

"We now have an opportunity for a pass to the Series next year in London and if we qualify this will give a great push for Russian Sevens because it will be held before the RWC Sevens where all eyes will be on us.

"If we do become a core team next year it will give us a lift and give us a great opportunity to compete at all the major tournaments next year. It will put us on a totally different level and now we are looking at it as a new Olympic sport."

Following a successful pool allocation draw on 28th February in Moscow for the RWC Sevens, Russia know their opponents for the tournament on 28-30 June (South Africa, Scotland and Japan), and their captain is inviting fans from all over the world to head to Moscow for the tournament.

"We are looking forward to Moscow because it will be the first time a Rugby event of such level will be held in Moscow," added Perov.

"When it comes to our game I know we will work harder to show good results at home, and the tournament will also be held in the Olympic Stadium, which is a fantastic venue.

"There will not only be fans from all over the world but our friends and family too and it will be important for us to show them what we do. It is important for us to not just walk the walk but talk the talk too.

"They, as well as all the other fans will also be able to see the best teams in action and it will be a great showcase in Russia."
