Scotland Sevens strengthen for new Series
Scotland Sevens has strengthened their squad ahead of the new HSBC Sevens World Series by increasing the number of signed players to 15.
With the first of nine rounds taking place on Australia's Gold Coast next month preparations are well and truly underway, and Scotland now have 10 professionals and five elite development players involved.
Former captain Scott Riddell and Michael Fedo were confirmed as the latest full-time professionals, whilst Lewis Young is included as an elite development player on a two year contract.
"I’m really looking forward to putting everything I have got into Sevens for the first time," said Riddell, who has played in 18 World Series tournaments in his career.
"I want to be the best I can be and hopefully by achieving that I can also help the team get the results we need on the field.”
Fedo, who has played in 19 tournaments and scored 26 tries added: "I’m absolutely delighted to be in the squad on a full-time basis now. It’s going to be great going into the season fully fit having trained with the squad in pre-season and continuing doing so throughout the year.”
With a new coach in Phil Greening, the increased squad is part of the plan to improve on their overall standing of 10th from last season and also looking to the future as they prepare for next year's RWC Sevens, and the Commonwealth Games on home soil in 2014.
“Scott [Riddell] and Michael [Fedo] have been core players in the Scotland 7s squad for the last few years and have always improved," said Greening.
“This is an opportunity for them to keep growing their skills in the game, get stronger and be a bigger part of the squad. Scott in particular has very good leadership skills and is a good example to the younger players.
“Lewis [Young] is the first player we have appointed who we look to be part of a new pathway scheme we want to develop."
