What is the secret to success in Rugby Sevens?
This season a new mini-series entitled Sevens Uncovered has been setting out to answer this crucial question by seeking the views on key areas of the leading protagonists - both players and coaches.
So far in this HSBC Sevens World Series season we have looked at the role played by today's increasingly specialist Sevens coaches, the playmaker/sweeper in Sevens, the flyers out wide, the aerial specialists whose job it is to win crucial restart ball, and the 'jackals' who sniff out the ball at the breakdown.
Over the next few weeks, ahead of rounds six and seven of the World Series in Hong Kong and Tokyo, we will investigate the importance of the backroom support staff such as the physio and Team Manager and also the **********
Like the rest of the IRB videos produced from the Sevens, these will be available to view at www.irbsevens.com/video and www.youtube.com/irb.
The Series so far
1. Sevens Uncovered: The Coach
We hear from World Series-winning coaches and some of those striving to reach their level of achievements.
2. Sevens Uncovered: The Playmaker
If Sevens is all about flair, it is the playmakers who personify the Game. We hear from some of the finest and ask them their secrets.
3. Sevens Uncovered: The Flyer
Still arguably the most crucial ingredient in Sevens, the out-and-out flyer is feared above all. We meet some of the best in the business.
4. Sevens Uncovered: 'Top Gun'
With an average of seven in any game, restarts are key in Sevens. If you win them you have the ball; if you don't you're defending. We talk aerial prowess with some of the best, including a former wide receiver now enjoying rugby.
5. Sevens Uncovered: The 'Jackal'
As in the 15-man Game, the breakdown is crucial to the flow of Sevens. With fewer players on the pitch, it is an altogether more transparent area of play, though, where the cream rises to the top.
